With the 2022-23 Scholastic Hockey League season upon us, here is the first installment of season previews for this year's SHL teams:

Glenbrook North
Outlook:
“We have a nice balanced lineup, four lines that can play with speed and skill,” North coach Evan Poulakidas said. “On the back end we have a mixer of some size and also some puck-carrying defensemen.”

Varsity experience: “It’s a veteran team. Experience in SHL play should benefit the team.  The key to our success is staying healthy. Last year’s team suffered some serious injuries that had some major impact on our season.”

Leadership: “Our two captains are Aiden Seigel and Owen Just but there are a number of seniors that have tremendous influence on this team.”

Top offensive and defensive players: “Returning is All-State 1st-team SHL (forward)  Owen Just. I would also expect Josh Genin, Aiden Seigel and Ryan Sandler to all have big years. On the back end we’re anchored by veteran Connor Katsamakis and newcomer Jacob Smith.”

Goaltending: “Returning in goal is Nate Kasdan and from the sophomore team Michael Reyderman.”

Loyola
Outlook:
“We should have a strong defense with three returners and some additions from outside the organization,” Loyola Gold coach DJ Lavarre said. “Goaltending should also be a strength. We return Bradin Haynie, who started for our SHL Championship run last year and won us a lot of big games down the stretch.”

Varsity experience: “Our group does not have a ton of players that played games in the SHL last year. We have a good mix of veterans and youth. We expect to see a good amount of improvement in all phases, but we hope our forwards rapidly improve over the course of the season.”

Leadership: “We have not named captains yet. Ryan Cowen served as a captain last year and we expect him to continue to lead our team. We expect others to step up as leaders.”

Top offensive and defensive players: “We are not sure at this point but we expect to know more soon.“

Goaltending: “We hope that Bradin Haynie, as a returner and a senior, can play a big role for our team as a leader on and off the ice. We also bring in Eddie Power, who is a big kid with a lot of potential.”

Lake Forest
Outlook:
“Our goaltending will be strong,” Lake Forest coach Steve Sarauer said.

Varsity experience: “Lake Forest is split fifty-fifty, juniors and seniors.”

Leadership: “This year’s captains are Robert Medica, Teddy Huddlestun, and Jack Carrabine.”

Top offensive and defensive players: “Top offensive players are Dennis Hickey, Jack Carrabine, Murphy Moorhead. Top defensive players are Robert Medica, Michael Burden, Aiden Meredith.”

Goaltending: “Teddy Huddlestun is a junior and this is his second season on the varsity team.  Teddy played AAA hockey for the Mission and also CS for the Falcons before coming to LFHS.”
