The Spartans opened up the 2013-14 hockey season with a 5-2 win against the Leafs Midget Major Hockey Club in a non-conference game in Northbrook. Nick Day’s shorthanded goal got GBN rolling in the 1st period. Johnny McNally who was a force in front of the Leafs cage all night netted 2 goals. Alex Crane and Parker Roth each chipped in a goal apiece. The physical play of freshman Zach Knudson was on display most of the night. Knudson set the tone of the game on the very first shift of the game as he took out an attacking Leaf forward with a clean hard hit, one of many during the night. Sr. goalie Nate Berger started the game but was felled by an ankle injury late in the 1st period and was replaced by junior goalie Garrett Cohen who played well in Berger’s place. GBN will travel to the Prairie Ridge showcase this weekend, where they will play their old rivals New Trier Green and Loyola Gold on Sunday.
