Slow start by Spartans comeback to defeat Hinsdale

GBN (16W, 1L, 2 OTL, 1T) defeated the highly ranked Hinsdale Red Devils Wednesday night in Northbrook by the score of 7-2.

With the Spartans struggling to get their game on track Hinsdale struck for two 2nd period goals to jump out to the lead.

John Ovnanyan brought some life back to the Spartans when his short side shot beat Hinsdale goalie Rhett Bergevin. The goal came just 8 seconds after the Red Devils 2nd goal.

From that point forward the Spartans would add 3 more goals in a span of 7 minutes 1more by Ovnanyan, to close out the 2nd period leading 4-2.

GBN would tally 3 more goals in the 3rd period 1 power play goal on their way to the 7-2 win.

Ovnanyan would finish the game with 2 G, 1A and a plus 3 for the game.

Shots were 46 to 13 in favor of the Spartans. Sam Bilis in goal for GBN earned the win.

York and Loyola Gold Fall to the Spartans

GBN 15w,1L,2OTL,1T Finished the week off with two SHL wins to remain unbeaten in SHL play.

Friday night the power play came thru again as Daniel Wilcox netted two goals and Sam Billis stopped all 21 shot he faced in route to a 3-0 win over the York Dukes in Addison Friday night.

Saturday the Spartans went to Lincolnwood to face their nemesis Loyola Gold.

GBN jumped out to a 2 goal when Matt Dahlke and Casey Miller each scored a goal 3 minutes apart.

On teacher appreciation night the Ramblers stormed back with 2 goals 2 minutes apart in the 2nd period

GBN scored a much needed goal late in the 2nd period when Michael Matz would finish off a nice 3-2 play. It was Matz’s first Varsity goal. Assist went to Robert Sasaki.

GBN would score another power play goal midway thru the 3rd period as Andrew Rubin would tip in a shot from Matt Dahlke.

The Ramblers did not go away scoring a 3rd goal with less than 5 minutes to play. As expected Gold pulled their goalie late in the period and a shot from the left point would hit the outside of the Spartans post and go wide. 

Goalie Matt Carr of GBN made 22 saves many from point blank range to earn the win.

SPARTANS DEFEAT Viator, Benet and Carmel

Glenbrook North (13 W, 1 L, 2 OTL, 1 T) remained unbeaten in SHL play with their two wins recently over Saint Viator and Carmel Catholic.

The Spartans defeated Carmel on Wednesday as Casey Miller and Andrew Rubin each scored two goals. GBN's fast start in the 1st period 3 goals, was fueled by Miller's 2 goals and Daniel Wilcox's one.  Stingy defense by the Spartans would limit Carmel to 13 shots for the game.  

In another SHL showdown, GBN traveled to Saint Viator on Breast Cancer awareness night. In a back and fourth game the Spartans escaped with a thrilling 4-3 OT win. Trailing with less than two minutes remaining GBN pulled their goalie for the extra attacker Everett Levin and Daniel Wilcox were able to win a puck battle in front of the Viator net where Matt Dahlke found a loose puck and  took a backhand shot that beat Vaitor goalie Michael Petrecca over his right shoulder to force the overtime.

In the 3 on 3 overtime, Daniel Wilcox scored the game winner as he tipped in the shot from Andrew Rubin to give the Spartans the win.

In a match up Sunday, 1st place Benet of the Catholic league came to Northbrook.  With the game tied going into the 3rd period GBN struck for 3 straight goals, Andrew Rubin, Jack Wolf and Matt Dahlke to pull away from the Redwings.

The Spartans travel to York on Friday and then to Loyola Gold on Sunday.
