Game 3 of the Championship series took place Sunday night in Northbrook.

With a winner take all scenario after the Patriots had defeated the Spartans 7-4 the night before. And what a classic it was, Seth Gideon put the Spartans in the lead as he took a pass from Jonathon Gauger and fired from the blueline that beat Corey Benjoya with 5 minutes left in the 1st period. The goal was a power-play goal.

Not to be outdone, the Patriots countered with a power-play goal of their own just minutes later. Jared Projansky came out from under the goal line and tried jamming the puck past GBN's goalie Nate Berger, Berger was able to make the first save but Projansky found the rebound and tied the game. End to end action would follow as both teams had some quality chances in the 2nd period only to be turned away by some excellent goaltending.

With under a minute to play in the 2nd period it was Projansky again that would make some nice individual moves and would finally find himself clear of everyone and beat Berger for his second goal of the game and his 5th in two nights.

Trailing 2-1 Zach Meier would send a dart over the right shoulder of Benjoya to tie the game at 2 with 12:29 to play in regulation. Both teams would again trade some scoring chances and as it looked like over time was about to come true but Nick Day let lose a 20 foot wrist shot from the right circle that deflected off of Berjaya's blocker and into the net with just 2;15 to play.

Day was not done, as with 1:14, he would streak down the right side of the ice and with Benjoya pulled for the extra attacker find the back of the open net and the celebration was on for the big crowd that had gathered.

The final would read GBN 4 Stevenson 2.

GBN has some quality chances early as Nick Day, Jonathon Gauger were both stopped from in close in the 1st period. GBN vs LAG - 2/28/13 - GBN wins Semi Final SHL Series

Game 3 of the best of 3 semi-final SHL series between Glenbrook North and Loyola Gold took place Thursday night in Northbrook, with the winner heading on to play in the SHL finals against Stevenson.

If you missed the first 3 minutes you missed a lot. Before most of the seats were warm, GBN forward Ryan Maksimovic scored on the very first shift of the game as he took a pass from Nick Day and beat Rambler goalie Jordy Reizen from in close.

The lead was short lived, 19 seconds to be exact. Cal Calalahan of the Ramblers gained control of the puck in the neutral zone and took a long shot that escaped GBN goalie Matt Memolo and the game was tied. The Ramblers would strike again 2 minutes later while on a powerplay. There would be no further scoring in the period. A key turning point of the game came midway through the 2nd period, the Ramblers had a golden opportunity to go up by two goals when they had a clear break away only to have GBN goalie Nate Berger stop the opportunity.

The game seemingly turned on that play as GBN kept the offensive pressure on. Loyola's Michael Donato took down a Spartan in front of the net which gave GBN a powerplay with less than a minute left in the period. A hard fore-check by Spartan Johnny McNally forced a turnover deep in the Ramblers zone where Nick Day picked the puck up an delivered a perfect pass to Maksimovic who made no mistake on the back door and blasted home the tying goal at the end of the period.

With tensions mounting and every play becoming bigger, none was bigger than Maksimovic's 3rd goal. The Spartan defense stiffened, giving very few chances the rest of the way. With the Ramblers goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Parker Roth would end the series with an open net goal with 30 seconds remaining making the final 4-2.

GBN will go on and face Stevenson for the SHL championship slated to start Mach 7th at home in Northbrook then March 9th at Stevenson. Game 3 if needed would be back at Northbrook on March 10th times to be announced.

The first game of the Prairie Ridge Invitational did not lack for drama, as the Spartans edged the Barrington Broncos on a last second goal by Senior forward Zach Meier 3-2.

With just over 9 minutes left in the period a disputed icing call led to a faceoff in the Spartan zone. Broncos Cameron McGregor won the ensuing drawback to defenseman Nick Coy who's shot from the right point got under GBN goalie Robbie Arner left pad giving the lead back. Frustration would develop for GBN as twice in a matter of minutes it looked as if GBN had tied the score with apparent goals only to have each called off by referee Jerry Weber because he had lost site of the puck.

Early in the 3rd period, Meier would score his first of the night after sophomore forward Chris Zhang and Junior John McNally sustained pressure on their fore-check, Meier would come out of the left side of the ice and fire a hard wrists shot from about 25 feet which beat Bronco's goalie Brian Perille just above his left shoulder and just inside the cross bar. With 15 seconds to play the Broncos had their best scoring opportunity of the period with odd man two on one rush. GBN vs. New Trier Green Game Recap - 11/7/12

Score: GBN 3 New Trier 6

For the first time this season the Spartans met their old foe New Trier Green in a battle of two of the top teams in the SHL in Wilmette Wednesday night.

The Trevians skated away with a 6-3 victory. New Trier scored the first 4 goals of the game, 1 in the first and 3 in the second before Nick Day scored a power play goal to give the Spartans some life. Minutes later, Day followed his power play goal with a shorthanded goal as Ryan Maksimovik and Day broke into the Trevians zone on a 2-1.

Maksimovic slid the puck over to Day just outside the Trevians crease and Day finished the play. The shorthanded goal seem to bring the game and momentum back to GBN. The Trevians scored their 5th goal and 4th of the period on what seemed to be a very innocent play that found the puck squirting around the Spartans net. A large scramble ensued and the Trevians found the loose puck and poke it home ending the scoring in 2nd period and giving New Trier back their 3 goal cushion at 5-2.

Each team scored 1 goal in the 3rd period. The Spartan goal was scored late in the period by Corey Lenhoff with the help of a nice assist from Seth Gideon.

The Spartans opened up the 2013-14 hockey season with a 5-2 win against the Leafs Midget Major Hockey Club in a non-conference game in Northbrook. Nick Day’s shorthanded goal got GBN rolling in the 1st period. Johnny McNally who was a force in front of the Leafs cage all night netted 2 goals.   Alex Crane and Parker Roth each chipped in a goal apiece.  The physical play of freshman Zach Knudson was on display most of the night. Knudson set the tone of the game on the very first shift of the game as he took out an attacking Leaf forward with a clean hard hit, one of many during the night.  Sr. goalie Nate Berger started the game but was felled by an ankle injury late in the 1st period and was replaced by junior goalie Garrett Cohen who played well in Berger’s place.
