After defeating #4 Loyola Gold 5-4 in a thrilling triple overtime quarter-final game and #1 seed Fenwick 3-2 in the semi-finals, GBN earned a spot in the 2011 Illinois State High School Hockey Championship Game against New Trier at the United Center on March 13th.

The game was GBN's third appearance in the State Championship in the last five years. The Spartans beat Fenwick in 2007 and New Trier in 2008. This year the Spartans gave it their all but came up just short, suffering a 3-2 defeat. This in no way took away from an excellent season that saw GBN win the Stevenson Thanksgiving Tournament and place 2nd in the National Invitational Scholastic Showcase in Jamestown, NY.
